2021/11/21 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Indonesian Round / Sunday - Race 2

Championship winning season ends with another podium

On Sunday at the Indonesian island of Lombok, recently crowned WorldSSP champion Dominique Aegerter rounded off an incredible rookie season in FIM Supersport World Championship with an additional title by clinching the team’s standing together with Ten Kate Yamaha Racing.

For Dominique Aegerter and his Dutch Ten Kate Racing team, a racing year that exceeded all expectations came to an end on Sunday. After taking the riders' crown a month ago in Argentina, it is now also clear that Aegerter and his Netherlands based outfit were also the best team of the year. The basis for this were the most race wins achieved, as well as the most pole positions were conquered and last but not least, the successful team also let itself be credited mostly with the fastest race lap. In some cases, Aegerter now owns the new WSSP track record on various circuits.

Aegerter, who started the last race of the season from pole position, wanted to bring an unforgettable 2021 to a glorious end with another victory. The course of the race, however, was hard to beat in terms of drama. Unlike in some previous races, the 31-year-old Yamaha rider from the canton of Berne had to deal with no less than six top-class riders in the fight for the last victory this year in the second Lombok race. A small carelessness in the last round was then also decisive that Aegerter finally had to settle with third place. However, it was enough to take the team championship title either.

"The last race of the season was a masterclass thriller; it was just incredibly exciting. I think it swept every spectator off their seats. Especially the last laps were awesome. It was a tough battle with five to six competitors, each of them having a lot of experience. It was predictable that everything would be decided in the last round. That was how it was. I went into the last lap in second place and immediately made a pass on Jules Cluzel in the first part of the track, which was pretty much at the limit. But I really wanted to be on top of the podium today, I wanted to end this season with a win. Before the last corner, however, Federico Caricasulo launched another attack, but I had an answer ready. It was again a situation in which both he and I were very much on the limit. Unfortunately, I was not able to ride through this corner perfectly, which Cluzel and Niki Tuuli took advantage of and slipped through. But third place at the end of the season is also okay. With this further podium we have won the team classification. That was also our top priority for today as well as I am particularly pleased to have given the fans another super show to the season’s conclusion."

"Winning the team championship makes me very happy because I will continue with this great people next year. We are a great team. Every one of us works incredibly hard to achieve success. Everyone believes in it too, as our sponsors do, suppliers and all the other supporters. Now is the time to say a big thank you to each and every one of them. The team is getting the support it needs from all of them so that they can continuously developing the bike. This World Championship crown is a confirmation of that, even more so because we had to give up two races in Barcelona. Beyond that, all the other awards are also ours. It was a fantastic season that was incredibly successful. It is still not easy for me to grasp all that we have achieved together. Thank you Ten Kate, thank you to everyone who believed in this project and gave us their support. We will try to continue like this next year so that we continue to justify their trust in us."

"I would also like to express my gratitude once again that this season finale could take place here at this beautiful place. The omens for a smooth success were not the best. But everyone involved made a great effort. So, my thanks to the government of Indonesia, including the local authorities, for being so accommodating, and to the WorldSBK officials for their efforts to make it as easy as possible for everyone to travel here. I am already looking forward to our return to Lombok next year. Until then, I hope they will continue to work diligently on the final completion of this beautiful circuit. Otherwise, the process worked well, and the unique Indonesian fans certainly deserve to see more motorcycle races at world level in their country."

"I will work even harder on myself during the winter months so that I can tackle the title defence next year perfectly prepared. That is not just my personal goal, it is something we have firmly set ourselves with the contract extension. But it is certainly not going to be a walk in the park, especially as there will be significant changes to the technical regulations from next season onwards. But I am sure that Ten Kate will work hard to prepare the Yamaha R6 in the best possible way, so that we can continue to be competitive with this bike. At the moment, however, nobody knows what the competition will actually be like when some new manufacturers will enrich this championship. Hopefully the series operators will be able to create a balanced rule so that all the bikes have roughly the same performance. Finally, I would like to congratulate my mate in Yamaha, Toprak Razgatlioglu, on winning the championship today. Absolutely fantastic what he has shown on track and achieved this year. Respect and recognition, a worthy new Superbike World Champion - congratulations Toprak!"
