2020/08/16 - Moto2™ World Championship 2020: Motorrad GP von Österreich / Race Report

#AustrianGP: Goals achieved for first Spielberg weekend

In a race shortened to 13 laps, Dominique Aegerter scored the first Moto2™ championship points in twelfth position as substitute for his compatriot Jesko Raffin in the Dutch NTS RW Racing GP Team.

Despite different weather forecasts, race day in Styria was accompanied by lots of sunshine. Round five of the season therefore got underway in stable conditions. After a terrible accident, however, the race had to be abandoned in lap nine. Fortunately, the all-clear from the medical centre at circuit was given a short time later that none of the riders involved were seriously injured.

The pleasant outcome of the first of two consecutive race weekends in Styria started with a positive warm-up session this morning. An attempt to the bike’s set-up had positive effects, as Dominique Aegerter was able to ride faster in the race. However, after the first start the 29-year-old from Rohrbach experienced a scary moment when he almost got involved in this bad crash. After the re-start he found a fast rear wheel by multiple Moto2 race winner Lorenzo Baldassari, to whom he clung on.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (NTS RW Racing GP, NTS), P12 +11.803 (Championship position 21st, 4 Points):

"I think we can be satisfied with the outcome of the weekend because we have achieved our goal to be in the points in the end. Even though it was a shortened race, I am happy about twelfth place and take four points for. To be honest, I did not think I would be able to do that in my only second Moto2 race this year. But race day started promisingly in the morning already. We tried something in warm-up and in doing so we made further progress. It was only small things, but they helped us in the race. At the first start I got away perfect. But then I was incredibly lucky that I got through the chaos in this terrible crash. That was really bad. Hopefully Hafizh Sayhrin and the other riders are ok. The race was stopped with a red flag."

"Since I was able to make up a few positions until the red flag came out, I started then from 19th position on the starting grid. Again, I had a great reaction and an even better start. That helped me to immediately move forward a few positions. For a short time, I was even riding in the top ten until Baldassarri overtook me. After that I rode with him all the time. I was always on his rear and I also copied some of his riding style. In the end I finished twelfth. Points in this highly competitive class are not a matter of course when you come back after a long time off. That is why I and my crew are very happy about this result. It is also a nice reward for the hard work over the past days. My crew actually had to make a lot of changes to the bike to get us ahead. But this weekend has shown very clearly that this project with NTS is making good progress."

"But in Moto2 it is incredibly difficult to make big jumps. That is why we are glad that we will have the next opportunity to continue the work on track in a week's time. And at the same circuit again which is even better. So, we will try to pick up where we left off today and improve our qualifying performance because the starting position have to be better. It is incredibly difficult to overtake when everyone is doing the same lap times. But for now, we can be satisfied. We did a good job in the race. Therefore, my thanks to everyone who supports me and to RW Racing for getting me to the chance replace Jesko. At this point I would like to take this opportunity to wish him all the best, hopefully his doctors will soon find out what is wrong with his health. It is a pity that he cannot be here. But I will also try to represent him as best as I can next weekend."
