2021/03/31 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Official Test Barcelona

Successful debut ride in Supersport World Championship

Dominique Aegerter has finished the first test of the season on top of the overall rankings after two days at the Barcelona circuit.

Although not the entire starting list was present at the only official Supersport test in Barcelona though, none of the top teams did not let to miss this opportunity. Dominique Aegerter and his Ten Kate Racing team, however, were the benchmark during the past two days at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The 30-year-old rider from the canton of Bern raised eyebrows at the first opportunity when he topped the first session on Monday afternoon, before rounding off the opening day perfectly as the fastest rider of the day. Stable and good weather conditions allowed for further improvements in terms of lap times on Tuesday as well. When nobody believed it anymore, Aegerter and the multiple WorldSSP World Champions from the Netherlands had something in their quiver after all shortly before the end of the last session. The Yamaha rider improved to a 1'44.220 to edge out the fastest rider on the track up to that point, Jules Cluzel, from the top spot.

Due to the current situation, the FIM Supersport World Championship 2021will not start this year until mid-May with the event at the Spanish circuit MotorLand Aragón.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"To be honest, I did not expect to enter WorldSSP like this. The past two days have been excellent in all respects. We were amazingly fast right from the start. So, my private practice sessions with a production Yamaha R6 at the Barcelona circuit had paid off. I knew the track from previous years, of course. But these track days were also particularly useful for me to get grips with the track, which had been slightly modified in the last section. In addition, the entire team did a super job. Everyone’s doing is on spot and we have already got on well as a crew. They have also made a few improvements since our rollout in Almeria at the end of last week. Overall, that was a big step. In this respect, I could not be more satisfied."

"During the two-day testing in Barcelona we were on a par with the competition at all times. Above all, we are already super consistently strong over the distance on used tyres. However, we still have something to catch up for a single fast lap but in the end, we were right at the top of the timesheets. I am particularly pleased about that. The conditions were always good, so we were able to try out an incredible number of different things. Starting with different chassis settings, different tyres, all kinds of electronics settings and gear ratios. In the end, we collected an incredible amount of valuable data for the upcoming season. This is particularly important in view of changing track conditions, to know in which direction we then have to work. In that respect, we are already well positioned."

"This test also confirmed again that I feel wonderfully comfortable in this team. However, that has been the case since the very beginning, when I first met them last November. Every one of them has gasoline in their blood and loves racing more than anything else. The cooperation with team manager Kervin Bos works perfectly, it is fun with him. As a former racing rider, he knows only too well the rider’s needs. Apart from that, every single person in the team does its job very accurately. That is incredibly important for confidence in them and in the bike. But we still have a lot of work ahead of us. First and foremost, I have to get used to this class a lot more, and also learn to understand the bike and the tyres even better. But until the first race on May 23rd in Aragón we still have five more days of testing, where we can continue to prepare at its best. But before that I would like to thank Ten Kate for their efforts. They have worked all winter to give me this bike. I also would like to thank all the sponsors of the team, as well as my personal ones, who all pull together and support us so much that we can race at this level."
