2021/08/14 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup: GP Österreich / E-Pole Report

Nothing lost yet leaving the line from eighth spot on the starting grid

Dominique Aegerter did not pull out all the stops in his E-Pole lap on Saturday afternoon.

A change to the weekend’s schedule upset the concept a bit in terms of preparation for E-Pole. Unlike previous MotoE™ events this year, when free practice three was always held on Saturday noon, teams and riders had to be ready at 08:15 this morning. In much cooler conditions, Dominique Aegerter improved his lap time compared to Friday to a 1'35.538, landing him fourth in the combined timesheet for all free sessions.

At the time of E-Pole in the afternoon, asphalt temperatures increased almost up to twenty degrees more. So, there were significant differences in terms of track conditions. Aegerter initially did not know how to approach his E-Pole lap and therefore, he started his time chase perhaps a little bit too cautiously. His efforts to make up for lost time in the final sections of the track were in vain, however. The 30-year-old will start from the third row on Sunday afternoon into the third-last race of the season.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica), Grid position 8th - 1´35.814:

"I went into this e-pole with different expectations. However, the conditions were very different from this morning. That was immediately apparent when the first riders completed their lap. I therefore changed my tactics a bit, not wanting to approach things too aggressively, and braked a bit earlier at one point. That was the reason why I lost quite a bit in the second sector. Still, it was a fast lap in the end. Compared to this morning's lap times, I did not need to hide."

"In the end, unfortunately, it was not enough to be better than eighth place on the grid. Having to start from the third row is certainly not the best starting position. But at this track there are many places where you can overtake well as well as riding in the slipstream for many long times. The positive aspect after this e-pole is that my immediate opponents in the title fight have not done so well either. Zaccone and Torres are just ahead of me in the second row of the grid, while Eric Granado will only start from the fifth row. From that point of view, I do not have to worry about too much. In addition, the feeling for the bike is also very good. This qualifying format with only one lap in E-Pole is always difficult to master. This time I took too little risk and that is why I didn't end up further up front."
