2021/08/19 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Navarra Round / Preview

Next WSSP stop: Navarra - again almost new territory

After a strong third place last Sunday in MotoE™ World Cup in Spielberg, the experienced 30-year-old Dominique Aegerter is not only looking forward to returning to his Supersport race bike, but he also wants to continue where he left off at the last WorldSSP event in the Czech Republic.

After the debut race of FIM Supersport World Championship two weeks ago in Most, the series is once again pitching its tents at unfamiliar territory. Like the Championship’s visit to the Czech Republic, the Circuito de Navarra in northwest of Spain has been added to the calendar at very short notice.

Dominique Aegerter and his Dutch supersport team Ten Kate Yamaha Racing had the opportunity two months ago to get to know the twisty 3.9-kilometer circuit in the north-western part of Spain, located in a beautiful landscape approx. 60 kilometres southwest of Pamplona and a two-hour’s drive from Bilbao. The region is well-known for Spain most famous and flavourful red wines. A two-day test provided initial findings and valuable information. Aegerter comes to the sixth meeting of the season in the series as world championship leader.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"With the upcoming race weekend in Navarra, a hectic month is coming to an end for me. Three races in a row are pretty exhausting. But as a professional you have to be able to handle it. As always, I am looking forward to seeing the guys from the Ten Kate team again. Since long we have grown together to a family which is no different with my MotoE team. Although it is a bit of a change every time, I am happy to be riding the Yamaha R6 again. So, I am really looking forward to Navarra in every way."

"I am still very grateful to the team that we took the opportunity during our summer break to took part in a test in Navarra. We were here for two days, at a track that was completely new to us until then. This track is very special. Especially because there are many bumps and too many slow corners for my taste. During a lap around here, we need first gear no less than six times. Nevertheless, I quickly developed a good feeling for the track, and I was also very fast on these two days. So, I hope we can continue as we have been doing."

"First of all, we have to focus on Friday’s free practice sessions in order to work out a good setup as quickly as possible, as well as to understand the tyre situation and find a suitable gear ratio. For Superpole, the goal is to get back into the front row of the grid, or at least for row two. Then we should be in a good position for the races. Finally, I hope for good weather this weekend, if possible, not necessarily with temperatures up to 45 degrees though, which is not uncommon in mid-summer of Spain. Anyway, I am feeling in great shape and I am fully motivated as always."
