2021/08/21 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Navarra Round / Saturday Report

Season’s win number seven on Saturday in Navarra

After a superior pole position, however, Dominique Aegerter had to push hard for this victory at WorldSSP’s premiere at the Circuito de Navarra in the northwest of Spain.

Dominique Aegerter already left no doubt on Friday afternoon that he is also the one to beat at round six of the season in the hard-fought Supersport World Championship. In Superpole on Saturday morning, however, the 30-year-old Yamaha rider went one better when he secured the top spot on the grid for the third time this season with a gap of more than 0.6 seconds on his first opponent.

In the scorching heat of the afternoon, however, the first race of the weekend began contrary to his expectations. Aegerter got off the line badly and, after hectic opening laps, he temporarily found himself in seventh place. But as the eleventh race of the season went on, Aegerter got stronger and stronger, catching his opponents one by one, and finally, after a lap-long battle for the lead, edging out his toughest contender in the points table, South African rider Steven Odendaal. Aegerter even managed to build up a gap of 4.4 seconds by the time he reached the chequered flag.

Grid position: Pole position / Race 1: Winner

"A great race with a great win, I am super happy. However, it started less pleasantly because I did not get away well at the start. So, it was a tough fight to get to the front in the first laps. It was not easy to overtake the guys and, above all, to leave them behind me. But based on our strong practice sessions and Superpole, I was sure I had the pace to pull away once I was at my own. That worked out wonderfully. The first half of the race was nevertheless more arduous than I would have liked. A big thanks to the whole team for their hard work, and once again for the effort and expense of not missing this test opportunity here two months ago. The conditions in the afternoon were almost abnormal, from everywhere the heat was to be felt. So, an ice-cold shower is the first thing I treat myself to after this performance."

"After that I need to recover a lot and recharge my batteries for tomorrow so that I can deliver my 100 percent again. Hopefully I will manage a better start so that I can get to the front faster. Then I think it should be a little easier to withstand these strains. The stress and pressure are much less when you do not have to risk so much on the brakes. The competition is incredibly strong, so we will have to keep giving everything. In warm-up we will try to improve a few details and then we should be optimally prepared for the second race of the weekend. Before that, I would like to thank all our sponsors and patrons. Since the beginning of this project, we can count on their great support. I would also like to thank the fans at the grandstands for cheering us on. It is so nice to see that the atmosphere is building again."
