2022/04/04 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Official Aragón Test / Day one

On top as soon official test gets underway

Dominique Aegerter made a blistering start to the opening day of a two-day testing at Spain's MotorLand Aragón circuit on Monday, as the current champion led the second session by half a second from his first rival.

Frosty temperatures just above the freezing point were again a spoiler on Monday morning in the outback of the east coast of Spain. For this reason, Dominique Aegerter and his experienced crew from the Dutch Ten Kate team decided to wait in the pits until the asphalt warmed up under the sun.

Shortly after midday it was then time for 31-year-old Yamaha rider from the canton of Berne to begin its testing program. Putting in a 1´54.550, Aegerter immediately set an exclamation mark by distancing his opponents by 0.5 seconds. During the third practice session of the day, Aegerter improved to a 1'53.914, just 0.1 seconds off the best time of the day set by Italian Nicolo Bulega. The test will continue on Tuesday.

The 2022 FIM Supersport World Championship calendar includes twelve events, starting with this weekend's opener in Aragón, Spain.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"Things are gradually getting serious. At the only official test before the season opener this weekend, all the teams and riders are out on track for the first time with all their new machines. You can already feel a little bit of race fever. Almost all the teams are using their race engines as well as the official Pirelli tyres at this test. These two days are practically the first real test of strength. Unfortunately, this test also started with a delay because the temperatures were still very fresh in the morning. At five degrees asphalt temperature it made no sense to go out on the track. But over the course of the day, it got warmer. At the time of the second session, the asphalt had 17 degrees, while later in the afternoon 23 degrees were measured. From the second session on, we were able to work reasonably though."

"We were very fast again right away, so we were able to continue our program with different bike settings. I finished the second session of the day fastest by half a second. That was very much to my liking. In session three I had to admit defeated by a hundredth of a second. But second overall at the end of the day is also something to be proud of. However, unlike some other riders, we did not put in a soft tyre at the end. Instead, we were focussed on race distance. I am very confident that we will further improve tomorrow, especially as we have some good tyres ready for a time attack. Ultimately, though, it remains a test and the first race will reveal the truth. I think we will also skip the first session tomorrow, as at 10:00 the temperatures are still very cool. After that we have two more 45-minute sessions, which I hope we can use as well as we did today."
