2022/04/29 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: Gran Premio de Espana / QP Report

Full attack from the second row of the grid at the season opener

Dominique Aegerter has created a good starting position for the opening races of the 2022 MotoE™ World Cup with a fifth place during the first qualifying session of the year.

The start of the racing season of the electric bike series began in fine weather on Friday morning, but anything else than clear track conditions at the famous track in southern Spain. A heavy thunderstorm on Thursday evening had left its mark. During the free practice one, there were still many wet spots over the course of a lap at the 4.4 kilometres Circuito de Jerez.

This Friday should also prove the modified schedule of the weekend, which is now used in MotoE. FP1 started at 08:25 local time, followed by FP2 at noon and two qualifying heats with Q1 and Q2 in the afternoon.

Dominique Aegerter finished both free practice sessions in eighth place overall, securing a direct entry into Q2. In the short time chase in meanwhile good track conditions, the 31-year-old from the canton of Berne ended up in fifth place. This means a start from the second row for the first race of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Grid position: P5 - 1´48.763 (5/6)

"First of all, I really am happy that things are getting serious in MotoE from now on. This is already the third year I am competing in the electric bike series and our preparation has gone well. With my new crew there were no adjustment problems, we were immediately on the same line. As I mentioned, very little has changed to the bike. As for the changed schedule for the weekend, today was the baptism of fire. The first practice in the morning was almost for the cat, because it was still very fresh and the track was half wet, half dry. Nevertheless, the two free practice sessions were enough for a bike check. By the time of qualifying in the afternoon, however, it was very hot as asphalt temperatures rose up to over 40 degrees, which was never the case during our tests here. It was therefore a bit like flying blind to set up the bike for these conditions, especially as I also got straight into Q2."

"But my crew practically hit the bull's eye. In that 10-minute qualifying session, I had four or five laps to get myself into a good starting position for the races. In the end, I ended up in fifth place. I think, starting from the second row of the grid is not too bad because my main rivals are on my left and right. My goal is to fight for a podium finish on Saturday and also on Sunday. I think it is good that there are two races at each event this year. This increases the number to 14 races. That should be a small advantage for me because my strength is consistency in the races. I am looking forward to the season opener, especially since the weather is sure to be nice. Plus, it's cool to race in front of the fans again and having guests in the paddock."
