2022/05/19 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Estoril Round / Preview

Beautiful but also painful memories of Estoril

This weekend, Dominique Aegerter returns as reigning WorldSSP champion to the place where his incredibly impressive story of success in Supersport World Championship began a year ago with his maiden victory in this series.

The production race bikes-based world championship returns from a four-week break with the third meeting of the season. For the last time, the iconic TT Circuit of Assen in the northern part of the Netherlands was host of the series at the end of April. It was the home race of Dominique Aegerter's Ten Kate team, which the 31-year-old Swiss once again turned into a full triumph for his team from neighbouring Nieuwleusen.

At the Estoril circuit, not far from Portuguese’s capital Lisbon and the Atlantic coast, different conditions are to be expect than in Assen, where it was very cold. For the next few days, beautiful early summer weather will play a role when it comes to set up the team’s Supersport Yamaha. But Aegerter and his experienced crew of the Ten Kate Racing Yamaha Team are fully prepared for all possible situations and will try to leave Estoril as a winner as well.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)

"After our fantastic weekend at my Ten Kate team's home race in Assen, I am now looking forward to Estoril, where we will again give everything to continue at this level. Unlike my guys in Ten Kate, who have had almost four weeks off, I have not been out of race mode because of my commitments in MotoE at Jerez and Le Mans recently. But I am very sure that the team's technicians have worked a lot on improving the bike during this time. From pole position, we extended our lead in the standings to 30 points with two wins at Assen. But that does not mean anything because the season is still very young. I have equally fond memories of Estoril when I won my first Supersport race there a year ago."

"Furthermore, last March we were in Estoril for a two-day test. However, we did not as many laps on that occasion and I remember that this test had very painful consequences for a while. The rib that was cracked in a stupid fall at the time has now completely healed and is no longer causing me any problems. The weekend before last, Moto2 European Championship was in Estoril, where it was very hot. Nevertheless, the lap times were very fast. So, the track’s conditions are good. Apart from that, I have always liked the track in Estoril. That is why I am going into the weekend again with the aim of being at the front in every session and fighting for the podium or, if possible, for victory in both races. If I have fun riding out there from free practice one on, then I am sure it will become good."
