2022/08/20 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: Motorrad GP von Österreich / Saturday - Race 1

Important point sealed with second place

Dominique Aegerter fought like a lion in Saturday's race in Spielberg but had to settle for second place at the line.

In contrast to the last race before the summer break in Assen at the end of June, this time everything worked out at the start. Dominique Aegerter left the line well from fifth position on the second row but lost some time due to a crash by Italian rider Matteo Ferrari in turn one, while his fiercest rival in the battle for overall MotoE™ World Cup victory, Brazilian Eric Granado, settled second place following race leader Mattia Casadei from Italy.

Aegerter, on the other hand, had to deal with Kevin Zannoni from then on, who proved out to be a tough contender because the 31-year-old Swiss needed three laps to pass the Italian rider. In third place, Aegerter set the fastest lap times, but that was not enough to catch up with the leaders Mattia Casadei and Granado.

The second race of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Styria will start on Sunday at 15:30 local time. SRF and ServusTV will broadcast via live stream.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica)
Grid position: 5th / Race 1: Second

"Second place was the maximum today, so I am happy with that. We were pretty strong in every session, even if something was missing in qualifying. In the end, only two tenths made the difference and we had to start from the second row. The race started with a moment of shock for me when Ferrari crashed and lay on the asphalt directly in front of me. Fortunately, I was able to avoid hitting him, but the gap to the front was there immediately. After that it was difficult to close the gap, especially as I also had a tough battle with Zannoni. It was not easy to overtake him, and the gap to Casadei and Granado started to increase."

"With a MotoE bike it is hardly possible to go much faster than the others. I was able to catch up a little, but seven laps were too few to close the gap. In the end, Casadei crashed in the second last corner before the flag. That is why I gained one position. We tried to finish ahead of Granado and Ferrari, but Granado was faster today and closed the gap by five points. There are still three races to go, and we still have a cushion of 26.5 points. Tomorrow, we have the next race where we will fight for the podium again. Let's see what happens, hopefully the weather will stay stable so we can give the spectators a great show again. But before that, a big thank you to my team. They did a great job again and gave me a strong bike."
