2022/09/24 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Catalunya Round / Saturday - Race 1

Greatly successful Saturday in Spain

After taking his fifth pole position of the year, Dominique Aegerter stormed to a dominant eleventh win of the season in Barcelona this afternoon.

When a thunderstorm passed the area around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last night, many things pointed to be a wet Saturday in northeast of Spain. But it was just a short rain shower and the 4.6 kilometres-long track had dried out by the start of Superpole, which decides the starting grid. In the time chase for the best starting positions, Dominique Aegerter underlined again his superior level of performance, as he already had done on Friday afternoon, when he secured the top spot on the starting grid with a new lap record again.

From pole position, however, Aegerter had to settle for third place in the first corner behind Italian rider Federico Caricasulo and Can Öncü from Turkey. In the meantime, Aegerter even dropped back two positions, but he quickly made up for it. On the third lap, the 31-year-old Swiss then got serious and took the lead in the fiercely contested race. With one fast lap after another, he quickly built up a safe distance to his pursuers and was out of danger until the finish. Incidentally, the race was stopped after one lap and shortened to twelve laps after the restart.

The second race of the weekend will start at the usual time on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. local time. It can be followed via live stream on the internet platform of the Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com. Eurosport 2 will begin its broadcast ten minutes before the start of the race.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)
Grid position: Pole / Race 1: Winner

"It was a fantastic Saturday. We were already very fast yesterday, but this morning we were able to improve further. In Superpole we managed to put in a 1´43.9, so we were again more than a second faster than the others. That is something really very impressive. I got away well at the first start, but then there was the red flag straight away. I did not like the shortened distance after the restart so much at first but that is the way the rules are. After the second start I struggled in the first laps. But when I was able to race my pace, I took the lead and immediately pulled away a bit. The pace was very high until the end. Yesterday and today, we were lucky with the weather. For Sunday it looks a bit mixed again. But until then I am happy about this victory because our goal was to finish ahead of Baldassarri and we scored five points more than him, which was very important. I am also happy for Ten Kate that they were able to take this win. It is a nice debut for the new and very ambitious Motonext project, which they launched only recently and presented to the public last night."

"Tomorrow we will give everything again so that we can fight for victory. Apart from that, it is nice that we have had such a successful weekend so far here in Barcelona, where I often go to train during the winter month. But before we think about tomorrow, it is important that we sleep well tonight and get some rest. Then we will have a chance to try out some changes in the warm-up. If it stays dry, the competition will have to come up with something to stop us. Provided, of course, that we can keep going like this. We have put together a very strong package. Over the distance we have a clear advantage in terms of grip. Especially in the long right-hand corners, where some others, unlike us, struggle with a spinning rear wheel. But we managed to keep this spinning at bay with the setup and also due to my riding style. But if the weather changes completely or is changeable throughout the day, then the cards will be reshuffled for everyone. So, I am hoping for sunshine on Sunday and looking forward to the second race."
