2022/11/20 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Australian Round / Sunday's Race 2 Report

All-dominant season ends with 17th triumph

Dominique Aegerter ended his outstanding Supersport career in the style of a great champion as he once again put his opponents in their place on Sunday at Phillip Island.

The last race day of the year was marked by the weather capers typical of South Australia. In the end, however, Dominique Aegerter eclipsed everything and closed the season that will go down in the history books with another victory. While this morning’s warm-up was held under mixed conditions and therefore not many impressions could be gathered, the weather took pity on the participants during the race when it remained dry.

Starting from fourth on the grid, Aegerter got off to a better start today than yesterday and immediately pushed into the leading group, where a fierce battle for the lead position broke out in the first third of the race. Again, and again, Aegerter and his fiercest rival this year, Lorenzo Baldassarri, and Federico Caricasulo took turns at the front. On the eighth lap, Aegerter took command and pulled away from his pursuers with two or three super-fast laps. At the finish he had a two-second lead over the Italian Caricasulo, while Baldassarri finished in third.

Aegerter and his Dutch Ten Kate team have been the measure of all things in Supersport World Championship over the last two years. In the process, they took 27 victories and captured pole position eleven times. As is well known, Aegerter will compete in the 2023 Superbike World Championship with the Italian GRT Yamaha team. In just over three weeks, preparations for the new season will begin with the first test in Jerez, Spain.

Grid position 4th / Race 2: WINNER

"I do not think we could have finished the season any better. Three races before the end, we were the world champions for the second time. In addition, we won the team championship twice in these two years, celebrated the most race wins and also scored the most pole positions and the fastest race laps most often. These two seasons were more than fantastic, we made history. In the end we had another great race today. After the changeable weather yesterday and this morning, we finally were able to race again in dry conditions at this beautiful track here at Phillip Island. But it was very windy and there were great fights with Federico Caricasulo and Lorenzo Baldassarri. In the beginning Nicolo Bulega was also very persistent. I always tried to stay at the front. But I only managed to do that when I saw that I had a small gap and stepped on the gas a bit more. This enabled me to increase the gap to my pursuers so that no one could overtake me from the slipstream. 17 wins and a total of 19 podiums in one season are actually incredible."

"So once again a big thank you to Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, to everyone at home, to my family and friends, to all the sponsors as well as to my coaches who always did a great job so that I could fully concentrate on racing. A special thanks also goes to the technicians of the team in Nieuwleusen, who always prepared the bike in the best possible condition. We have 24 races behind us in which not a single technical problem has occurred. They have used all their experience and worked super precisely. Without them I would never have been able to achieve these successes. For sure, I will miss this racing enthusiastic and incredibly experienced family very much. But we will remain friends forever and you never know what the future will bring. It's an indescribable feeling to leave this class with another win and all the records we've set. Of course, it would also be nice if I stayed, because then we would definitely have even more successes. But for me, the goal has always been to move up to the Superbike class, where the competition and rivalry is the greatest."

"It's time to show my potential there and compete with the big names who have also made history and set records in their careers. I am looking forward to this new challenge and wish Ten Kate all the best for the future and many successes in the Supersport class. The atmosphere and the cohesion at Ten Kate was something very special for me. That is something I will miss. That's why I was all the more pleased today when I was welcomed by my team in the Parc Fermé. Since Argentina, my team boss William has not been on site. He's at home with his family after the birth of his daughter. It wasn't yet possible to celebrate the title win and the three race victories at the last three race weekends with him. But I am very sure that we will have some nice celebrations together in the next weeks before my new career starts in mid-December with the first Superbike test. But for now, a huge thank you to Ten Kate and everyone involved in this project for these unforgettable years in 2021 and 2022."
