2023/02/19 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Off. Test Phillip Island - Preview

Official test kicks off Phillip Island race week

Dominique Aegerter eagerly awaits his Superbike debut ride at the fast and flowing circuit in southern Australia.

Unlike last year, when the Superbike World Championship traveled to the small island two hours' drive south of Melbourne for the finale in November, this week the season opener will take place there. Official tests are scheduled for the Monday and Tuesday before the first race weekend, and Dominique Aegerter and his Italian-based GRT Yamaha team are looking forward to them.

Despite his good track knowledge at Phillip Island, the two-time Supersport champion and overall winner of the 2022 MotoE™ World Cup will use this opportunity to gain initial experience with the more powerful Yamaha Superbike at this track. Otherwise, the final fine-tuning for the start of the season should succeed. Two two-hour sessions are planned for each of the next two days.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"After less than three months I am back at Phillip Island. Two days of official testing are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, right ahead the new championship gets underway next weekend with the first races and with it a completely new challenge for me. After many years I see Australia for the first time in summer, because before I always was here in October and last year once in November, when it was still winter here. After arriving mid of this week, I had two relaxing days and prepare for this important test although, I was able to enjoy a bit of the beautiful weather at the beach either. But now all the attention is on the next two days, I cannot wait to get back aboard my Yamaha R1."

"We were able to collect good data during the tests in Jerez and Portimao last month. But I still have to get more familiarized to the Superbike, and the Phillip Island track will also be very different with the new package. I know the circuit for many years, and I like it a lot. I also have fond memories of my victory in the last race of the season last November. Nevertheless, we still have a lot of work to do to be as well prepared as possible for the first race next Saturday. With this in mind, I hope we can make the most of our time on track in the upcoming days. I am also looking forward to hitting the track with my bike in the official design."
