2023/05/07 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Catalunya Round / Sunday - Superpole Race & Race 2

With eighth place on Sunday further important points and more experience gained

Dominique Aegerter started the race Sunday in Barcelona with a strong Superpole race, thanks to which he was able to tackle the second main race of the weekend in Barcelona from sixth spot in the second row.

Cloudy skies above the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya located in the northeast of the Catalan capital caused slightly cooler temperatures compared to the previous days and now and then also isolated raindrops, but they had no major impact on the race action.

After a great Saturday, Dominique Aegerter went into the sprint race in the late morning suitably motivated, starting from the second row and after a temporary drop down to seventh place, towards the final stage in light rain even had a possible podium finish within reach. In the end, the Yamaha rider ended up in sixth place.

The second main race began with a successful start from Aegerter's point of view, as he lost only one position on the way to the first corner. But the rest of the first lap was anything but ideal. The 32-year-old Swiss was only eleventh when he whizzed past his pit crew for the first time. After that, he struggled to make up places, but still worked his way up to eighth.

The championship continues in four weeks with the meeting at the Misano World Circuit not far from Rimini on Italy's Adriatic coast, after a two-day test at the same venue later this week.

Grid position: 2nd / Superpole-Race: P6 / Grid position: 6th / Race 2: P8

"Eighth place is a good result; I am not dissatisfied. Certainly, it was important to gather valuable knowledge and data again. We started from sixth on the grid, which means we had our best Superpole race so far this morning. Even more so in difficult conditions, because in the last two laps some rain drops started to fall. The second main race in the afternoon was another long and exhausting affair. I had a good start, but unfortunately not a good first lap as I dropped back to eleventh place. That is not where I wanted to see myself and that is not where we belong, because in those positions you are trapped in a group, and it is difficult to go your own way."

"It took me a while to start overtaking and catching up, and I think in the last two or three laps everyone was struggling with rear grip issues. Still, we made it to finish as the best independent team again. But not only that, the points for eighth place are very important for the championship and the team standings. Apart from that, we now have to analyze what happened in the race today, because after a very strong weekend we would have expected a bit more for the second race. We always had a good pace and the potential to fight at the front. Nevertheless, a big thank you to the whole team for the work, to Yamaha and all the sponsors and also to the great fans here in Barcelona."
