2023/04/22 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Dutch Round / Saturday - Superpole & Race 1

Strong comeback rewarded with sixth place

WorldSBK rookie Dominique Aegerter was delighted with his best race result so far this year on Saturday afternoon in Assen.

Saturday at the third stop of the 2023 FIM Superbike World Championship began with a wet free practice three this morning. By the time of the all-important Superpole, the track had completely dried out again and all teams and riders went out on track for the time attack for the best grid positions with slick tyres.

Dominique Aegerter rode to seventh on the grid in this 15-minute session. In the first main race of the weekend in even better conditions, the 32-year-old Yamaha rider got a good start from the third row but fell out of the top 10 on the first lap. After that, he needed a few laps to prevail against those in front of him. When Aegerter finally led the group, he was immediately able to ride his rhythm and pull away a little. With a strong finish, he made up two more places and finally saw the chequered flag in sixth place after an exhausting 21 laps.

The third meeting of the season will continue on Sunday with the Superpole race and the second main race starting at 14:00.

"The joy is great about my best race result in the World Superbike Championship so far. It was also good points for the championship. But sixth place becomes even more valuable when you consider that my first laps were anything but good. My start was still good, but in the first chicane I made a few small mistakes. After that I was fighting for tenth place. It was not easy to overtake because I did not know how and where I could squeeze past the others. After six or seven laps, I was finally able to set a strong pace."

"I think the comeback from 13th to sixth place was a strong performance overall. Hopefully we can achieve a similar result in the Superpole race so that we can start from a position in the top three rows again tomorrow afternoon. Today it was a little easier for me towards the end of the race than for Alex Lowes or Scott Redding, for example, because they suffered grip issues on the rear tyre. That is why I was able to overtake both of them easily. It was hard to miss that they were struggling at the exit of the corners. This part of the race was much easier for me than the early stages."
