2023/06/03 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Emilia-Romagna Round / Saturday's Superpole & Race 1

Strong sixth place on Saturday in hot Italy

In the first main race of the weekend in Misano, Dominique Aegerter fought a thrilling duel with no one else than multiple former world champion Jonathan Rea but had to settle for sixth place after a battle-filled 20 laps.

Saturday at the World Championship’s visit to the popular vacation region around Rimini had plenty to offer not only glorious early summer weather but also for all motorcycle racing fans. In an exciting Superpole this morning, two-time Supersport champion and last year's MotoE™ World Cup overall winner Dominique Aegerter was once again one of the contenders for a front row starting spot, even though this time he did not go beyond seventh place on the third row.

At the start of the first race shortly after midday, the surprising Superbike newcomer made up two positions, which Aegerter had to give up again shortly afterwards. From then on, the Yamaha rider attached himself to the rear wheel of Jonathan Rea. The result was a vehement attempt to get past the most experienced and successful rider in the history of the World Superbike Championship. Aegerter also had his nose in front a couple of times, but Rea had an antidote ready every time. At the finish, the two were separated by less than half a second.

On Sunday, the Superpole race over ten laps is on the agenda first, followed by the second main race of the weekend at 2:00 pm. ServusTV will provide full live coverage in German-speaking countries.

Grid position: 7th / Race 1: P6

"A sixth place in this race is something I can be a bit proud of. I started well, but it was a long race and also a hot race. I did not really know what to expect in terms of tyre wear in these conditions because yesterday I crashed in my long run. I was right behind Rea most of the time and I learned a lot because he did a great job defending his position. I also saw how he saved his tyres. Still, I tried to overtake him a few times because I was faster than him in some parts of the track. I think I overtook him about four times, or so. But I never managed to take the corner smoothly, so he was able to repass me immediately. Still, it was a nice battle with him, even if I do not like it as much that he finished ahead of me."

"In tomorrow's sprint race I will try to finish in the top six. Then I would start one row ahead in the afternoon. Hopefully the weather will stay nice, because a lot of fans have come from Switzerland, and of course there are also a lot of Italians here. For that reason alone, it would be great if we could achieve a better result than today. Not to forget a big thank you to my GYTR GRT Yamaha Superbike Team, because they gave me a bike with which I am competitive. Finally, a word about my condition after the surgery, which is much better. I had absolutely no problems and was able to push until the end."
