2025/02/20 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2025: Australian Round - Preview

WorldSBK 2025 kicks off at Phillip Island

This weekend, Dominique Aegerter starts his third season in the top-class FIM Superbike World Championship. Together with his Italian GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, for whom he has also ridden in the last two years, he wants to put last year's setbacks behind him as quickly as possible.

34-year-old Dominique Aegerter from the canton of Bern is not a rookie in the production-based world championship. 2025 is his third attempt in familiar surroundings. Due to health problems at the start of last season and bad luck with injuries at the halfway point, the ambitious rider from Bern fell short of expectations. This year, Aegerter's main aim is to catch up with the top riders again.

During winter tests, the after-effects of long-term injuries from a training accident in August last year were still causing him problems. The Yamaha rider is feeling an improvement in his physical condition every day but still has to be careful when it comes to making predictions for the upcoming first race weekend at the picturesque Phillip Island circuit.

For the two main races over 20 laps this Saturday and Sunday, a pit stop to change tyres is mandatory for safety reasons. At the halfway point of the race, there is a time window in which each driver must come into the pits.

The season opener of the production-based World Championship at magnificent Phillip Island, two hours' drive south of Melbourne, has long been a traditional event of the series. For years, the last weekend in February has been the fixed date in the racing calendar. The racetrack in the middle of a nature park is very popular with all participants.

For all fans in German-speaking countries, Superpole and race action at the season opener can be seen live on «ServusTV». Alternatively, there will also be live streams on the Austrian broadcaster's online portal and on the official WorldSBK website, where all of the weekend's sessions will be broadcast live. However, the latter is subject to a charge. Eurosport is also planning to broadcast the races on Saturday and Sunday on the free ESP1 channel. With the digital platform «Eurosport Player», the broadcasts can be watched live on various end devices.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

«I am very happy to be contesting my third season in Superbike World Championship with the same team. Before the first race weekend, we had a test here at Phillip Island on Monday and Tuesday this week, where we were able to collect a lot of valuable data. This will certainly be of great help to us this weekend. I am already looking forward to the first free practice session on Friday morning, where we will put together everything we have. I am hoping for a slightly better start than at the test, where I struggled a bit. The weather forecast for the next two days looks very good. Unfortunately, it is supposed to change on Sunday. But it is what it is and the same for everyone.»

«I am also looking forward to the flag-to-flag races, which will certainly be exciting. But we practiced a lot of pit stops, where my crew did a fantastic job every time to make the tyre change as quick as possible. As for my physical condition, I still need a little time to let my shoulder recover more. After the two days of testing, I am still feeling the strain a bit. But I do not think there will be any problems this weekend. I like Phillip Island, the track and the area, and I have a lot of experience from the past where I have had good results. So, I hope to have a good weekend.»
